Sahlgrenska Academy International Starting Grant 2021

Annual call aiming to encourage the institutes at the Sahlgrenska Academy to recruit talented researchers with international experience. This year's call opens June 16, 2021.

Anyone wishing to apply should contact one of the institutions of the Sahlgrenska Academy, since each application must have a letter of support from the Head of Institute (prefect). In total, SEK 4 million is announced to a maximum of 4 researchers. Grants awarded shall be added to the budget for the institutes and be used for the researcher's research activities. Grants awarded are disbursed to the institutes no earlier than when the researcher has taken up the employment at Sahlgrenska Academy. Details for employment should be described in the Head of Institute's support letter. Also note that although the grant can be used for salary, it is counted as an advantage in the evaluation if the grant is preferably used for the researcher's research activities.

Who can apply?

Researchers who publicly defended their thesis, in Sweden or abroad, within the field of health sciences no more than eight years before the closing date of this call (i.e. for the call 2021, one must have defended their thesis September 1, 2013 or later, adjusted for deductible time) and who has held an international postdoctoral position for at least twelve months.

Including researchers who hold an international postdoctoral position and have been abroad for at least 12 months, but are employed by the University of Gothenburg (e.g. through a Research Council's international postdoctoral fellowship or MSCA-IF global fellowship).

Researchers are eligilbe to apply who publicly defended their thesis within the field of health sciences in a country other than Sweden, and have held a postdoctoral position for at least 12 months, abroad or at a Swedish institution other than University of Gothenburg. 

The application should contain

Applications should be written in English and submitted as one merged PDF document.

The first page should be the application form containing the administrative information (special form), followed by the appendices as stated below.


  1. Signed letter of support from the institute (Scanned, signed by the prefect)
  2. CV
  3. Description of the postdoctoral position, including when and where it was done, as well as the results achieved (maximum 1 page)
  4. Research programme, including description of planned research activities at the Sahlgrenska Academy (maximum 5 pages)
  5. Summary of any deductive time, which the researcher wants to deduct from time after dissertation (If applicable).

How to submit the application?

The complete application is sent to applications@sahlgrenska.gu.se no later than September 1, 2021.
