Sahlgrenska Academy collaborates with the Västra Götaland Region in the Sahlgrenska Life project to create better conditions for future research in life science. The new buildings will provide access to modern and functional premises, developed to meet the faculty's future needs.
The three buildings, one on each side of Per Dubbsgatan and one that is being built across the street, will increase proximity between research and clinical work, making movement between the university on Medicinareberget and the university hospital on Sahlgrenskatomten easier.
Translational research environments will be found in all three buildings. Sahlgrenska Academy plans to rent approx. 10,000 square metres in Sahlgrenska Life buildings 2 and 3, but also conduct research and education in building 1, although not as a primary tenant. Building 1, which is being built for laboratory medicine, is of great interest to Sahlgrenska Academy and future research in, among other things, precision medicine.
Even the education of the future gets better conditions through Sahlgrenska Life. In building 3, a unique skills center is being created that will contribute to Sahlgrenska Academy's students coming out well prepared for working life.
The part of the Biomedical Library, currently located on Hälsvetarbacken, is also moving to building 3.
In the spring of 2023, the university decided to reject the rental proposal from Vitartes and notified the Västra Götaland Region of its interest in implementing the project with the region as the sole property developer.

The Department of Community Medicine and Public Health, which is part of the Institute of Medicine, plans to gather its activities in Geovetarcentrum at Wavrinsky's plats. The premises will become available when the current tenants from the Faculty of Science move to Natrium.
The move also means an opportunity to deepen the collaboration with the Västra Götaland Region's primär och nära vård, as Regionshälsan's R&D unit in Gothenburg also plans to move into the premises.
A review of how the building might be utilised efficiently is now underway. No actual renovation is planned before moving in, but only minor adjustments to the premises.
After the current phase, a rental proposal will be presented. The move-in date has not yet been decided.
The development of the premises for the Sahlgrenska Academy's operations at Östra are aimed at improvements of several kinds. The change will result in a clearer appearance of the University of Gothenburg visual identity when visiting the site. Furthermore, the teaching environments should enable modern teaching methods. Studying at Östra is to be perceived as inspiring and attractive. Students should have a common meeting place with opportunities for individual work as well as in groups. It will also be easier to participate digitally in teaching and meetings.
The research environments needs to be flexible and adaptable to future changes. The collaboration between academy and hospital further strengthens the clinical research.
The plans for Östra consist of many sub-projects. They will be implemented in steps and will therefore take a long time to complete. The construction for new building for maternity ward and neonatal care.
is planned to take place between 2023 and 2028.
The Real Estate and Sustainable Development unit at the University of Gothenburg runs projects to improve the campus and student environment at the Medicinareberget campus.
In Medicinarelängan's lower floor, near Salt & Syra and Lundberg lab, reconstruction is underway to increase the number of study places. The work is planned to be completed in the spring of 2024.
