By learning the Swedish language, you come closer to society and culture during your time in Sweden.
The registration for Autumn 2023 period 2 will open on October 4 at 10:00.You apply to the courses by using the link below the subheading “Registration” on this webbpage.There are courses given at four different levels. The courses are based on the language level scale found in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), and they cover a span from level A1 to B1. Each semester is split up into two course periods of 10 weeks each. That means that it’s possible to take two courses during a semester, e.g., Swedish 1 and Swedish 2.
Please note that Swedish 1–3 together cover level A1+A2, which means that one course does not fully match a CEFR level.
There are two course periods during each semester. Application to the courses is only open a certain period of time. See below for dates.

This is a beginner’s Swedish course which includes pronunciation exercises, reading, oral training, basic Swedish grammar and short writing exercises. After having completed the course, you should have basic knowledge of Swedish – partly A1 in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Please note that this course does not require any previous knowledge of Swedish at all.
We meet approximately once a week. Before each lesson you need to work with the corresponding course book chapter on your own using a course guide and prepare the assignments listed in the guide. The guide and all other material you need throughout the course (except the course books and the corresponding audio files) are available in the University of Gothenburg learning platform Canvas.
This is a Swedish course intended for employees with knowledge of Swedish equivalent to the Beginner’s course in Swedish, Course 1 – partly level A1. You will improve your Swedish language proficiency and broaden your knowledge of Swedish society. You will also acquire a deeper knowledge of important basic grammar as well as an elementary working vocabulary. After having completed the course, you should have basic knowledge of Swedish – A1 and partly A2 in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
We meet approximately once a week. Before each lesson you need to work with the corresponding course book chapter on your own using a course guide and prepare the assignments listed in the guide. After having completed the course, you should have intermediate knowledge of Swedish – partly B1 in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
We meet approximately once a week. Before each lesson you need to work with texts and exercises on your own using a course guide and prepare the assignments listed in the guide. The guide and all other material you need throughout the course (except the course books and the corresponding audio files) are available in the University of Gothenburg learning platform Canvas.
In Swedish Language Course 1–3, we use the textbook Rivstart A1/A2 (2023). You need both the one called ”Textbok” and the one called ”Övningsbok” (exercise book). Both books are needed from the start. In Swedish Language Course 4, you will get more information about the course material at the first seminar.
The books can be bought from Campusbokhandeln (en.campusbokhandeln.se), Götabergsgatan 17, or online, for example through Adlibris (www.adlibris.com/se) or Bokus (www.bokus.com).
If you don’t have any previous knowledge of Swedish, you should apply for Basic Swedish 1. If you already have taken and passed one of our courses of Basic Swedish, you just apply to the next one. New students with some previous knowledge of Swedish are highly recommended to take our online placement test, in order to be able to choose a suitable course. The placement test determines your language level according to the CEFR scale (Common European Framework of Reference for language), and the result of the test will guide you in your choice of course.
Once you start the test, you have 48 hours to complete it. During this period of time, you can pause the test anytime. It takes approximately one hour to complete it. It’s important to be in a calm environment when taking the test. Make sure to have a stable internet connection, and use a modern computer with an updated web browser. Also check your audio settings since listening is a part of the test.
After you have completed the test, the result shows you language level of Swedish according to the CEFR scale. It’s now up to you to analyze and interpret your results, and from that outcome choose a Basic Swedish course that fits you. We have provided a few examples how one can interpret the results and out of that choose a course.
Based on example 1, we recommend that you choose Basic Swedish 2, in order to continue acquiring language skills at the A2 level.
Based on example 2, we recommend that you choose Basic Swedish 3, in order to reach A2 in each category at the end of the course.
Based on example 3, we recommend that you choose Basic Swedish 2, in order to start the A2 level.
Based on example 4, we recommend that you choose Basic Swedish 4, in order to start and continue acquiring language skills at the B1 level.

You apply to a course by using the link found below “Registration”. Note that registration only is open certain periods of time. Before you apply, it’s crucial that you read the descriptions of the courses carefully, and if you already know a little Swedish, you should use the self-assessment grid to determinate you level. If you are uncertain of what course to choose, please contact us. When you apply to a course, you have to fill in your e-mail address provided by the University of Gothenburg, since it’s used to link you to the Canvas page of the course.
The available seats of the courses are distributed on a first come, first served basis. It’s recommended to apply as soon as possible after registration starts. If you are admitted to a course you are not guaranteed a seat at the next level. You have to apply to every level you want to take part in. We will get back to you as soon as the registration period has ended and confirm if you have got a place on the course or if you are on the waiting list.
The courses provide no credits, but a student who has fulfilled the compulsory requirements of the course, and participated at least 80 % of the course, is awarded with a certificate.
