Our most important task is to seek out, develop, create and communicate new knowledge in our subject areas in the best possible way. Academia’s mission also involves reflecting critically on the historical and cultural traces left by people and on our social development.
The strategies of the Faculty of Humanities are devised within the framework of the University of Gothenburg’s vision of “A university for the world” and are based on the core values and positions presented there.
Our research is to be of high quality and there is to be room for both breadth and focus. Our education is to be of high quality in terms of both its subject area content and pedagogics. On the basis of our research and education, we have a long-term, broad-based and trusting relationship with the surrounding community. We contribute to an up-to-date and independent understanding of how our societies develop and change, but we also contribute to self-reflection on academia and society.
The Faculty of Humanities is a visible and accessible university environment. We offer welcoming, inclusive and well-adapted environments for research, education and collaboration. The Faculty of Humanities provides a sustainable and safe work and study environment for all its employees and students. Our activities are managed on the basis of mutual trust, with a focus on dialogue and follow-up.
The goal of the Faculty of Humanities for the next five-year period is to establish a very high quality in the Faculty’s research and education through the efficient use of our financial resources over the long term. We want research and education environments that are outstanding enough to attract additional qualified staff and motivated students from different parts of the community and the world. We want to develop our forms of teaching and learning that we use to meet new needs from our students, employees and the needs of the future labour market. Through our education and research, we aim to contribute to society’s long-term needs for skills and knowledge.
Within the Climate Framework for Higher Education Institutions adopted by the University of Gothenburg in 2019, we set annual targets for a progressive reduction in the overall climate impact of our activities.
Now that our activities for the first time are located in a common building, we also want to stimulate the development of different forms of co-operation, collaboration and communication both within and outside the Faculty. In this way, we hope to broaden the recruitment of our students and employees, be a relevant partner in external collaborations, and exploit our common strengths in research and education.
• Follow up on RED19 and create opportunities to share experiences within and between the Faculty’s research environments in order to develop solid foundations for high-quality research.
• Stimulate the development of more collaborations between the Faculty’s research and third-cycle education environments.
• Support the departments in implementing their strategies to fund doctoral students externally.
• Introduce and follow up a new funding allocation model within direct government funded research that pushes our activities to develop their quality while at the same time standing up for scholarly breadth.
• Formulate an overarching publication strategy for the Faculty.
• In particular, stimulate co-operation and networks between departments within the Faculty and between faculties within the University of Gothenburg, both within research and within education.
• Integrate the Faculty’s External Advisory Committee into our efforts to satisfy the long-term needs of society for knowledge and skills.
• Develop a communications strategy for external collaborations.
• Earmark funding for communication and collaboration projects in respect of both student recruitment and raising the University’s profile.
• Proactively develop our alumni activities.
* An acronym for work environment and climate surveys, the University’s model for mapping and developing the psychosocial and organisational conditions in the work environment.
