Welcome Services regularly arranges excursions, social events, lectures, seminars, workshops and other activities for international researchers, faculty, staff and PhD students. These are some of the recurring events.

The International Café is a casual meeting place, with free fika, for international researchers, faculty, staff and PhD students, as well as their families and hosts. The fika is arranged together with Chalmers University of Technology. It takes place in the beginning of each month.
An all-day excursion to the Tjärnö Marine Laboratory, which is located about two hours’ drive north of Gothenburg. The excursion is arranged once every spring semester and includes transportation to and from Tjärnö, as well as lunch. The research centre is one of the most modern marine research laboratories in Europe, and during the visit staff at the centre will talk about marine studies and lead a guided walk within the premises.
International researchers, faculty, staff and PhD students are shown around the historic quarters adjacent to Gustav Adolfs Torg, as well as other parts of central Gothenburg, by an experienced guide from the Museum of Gothenburg. For those who have recently arrived in Gothenburg, this is a great way to get to know the city. The city walk is usually arranged once per year.
The Gothenburg Botanical Garden is, with its 175 hectares, one of the larger botanical gardens in Europe and about 15 000 species and varieties are cultivated there. It has won several awards and is one of Gothenburg’s most popular and visited attractions. It is also home to the Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences. During the guided walk international researchers, faculty, staff and PhD students are accompanied by a guide from the botanical garden.
A seminar and workshop focusing on what it is like to live in Sweden where the participants get to learn about Swedish culture, customs and values. They also get to share knowledge about their own respective cultures, and discuss intercultural attitudes and skills.
A seminar for international employed staff where the participants get to learn about Swedish work culture, usually held once per semester. The program focuses on social benefits (such as insurance, sick benefits and parental leave), working rights (in regards to vacation, illness and pension among other things), unemployment insurance and trade unions in Sweden.
Every semester we invite Neuroscientist and Psychologist Desiree Dickerson, who shares her strategies for thriving and maintaining well-being in academia. In her inspirational talks she discusses, among other things, valuable strategies for productivity, motivation, and overcoming procrastination, as well as insights into imposter syndrome and the importance of embracing imperfection.
An informative lecture on the Swedish pension system, offering a comprehensive overview of the national, occupational, and private pension funds, as well as retirement rules and important considerations if leaving Sweden. Gain valuable insights into how to plan for the future with confidence and learn tips and tricks to optimize pension benefits.
On 13th December each year, international students and researchers from the University of Gothenburg and the Chalmers University of Technology gather for an unforgettable evening celebrating one of Sweden's most beloved traditions. The Lucia choir will fill the room with their enchanting melodies, creating a magical atmosphere that captures the spirit of the season. Attendees can also learn more about this cherished tradition and experience the warmth and joy of the holiday season
The International Evening is held once a year. It is an informal get-together were international researchers, faculty, staff, PhD students and international guests of the university get to mingle and get to know one another over dinner and drinks. It is held at Ågrenska Villan (on Högåsplatsen 2).
The International Reception is arranged in collaboration with the City of Gothenburg at the beginning of each autumn. It serves as a formal welcome to Gothenburg for international researchers working at the University of Gothenburg or the Chalmers University of Technology, as well as a chance for the researchers to get to know each other and make new acquaintances among their colleagues.
A lecture about coping with the winter in Sweden, which can be cold and dark. The seminar deals with how the limited daylight and the drop in temperature can affect one psychologically and physically, as well as with how one can go about to counter these effects.
