Courses for doctoral students

Doctoral studies includes, besides the actual thesis, courses at third-cycle level. The extent of compulsory and elective courses as well as other credit-yielding activites can be found in the general study syllabi for the third-cycle subject.

When you are admitted to doctoral studies, you, your supervisors and your student examinor will make a plan for which specific courses you should take. Some faculties have compulsory course elements that all doctoral students must take. Make sure to find out what applies to your specific faculty.

Intduction Day for Doctoral Students

All doctoral students must attend the Induction Day for Doctoral Students, according to a decision made by the Vice-Chancellor. As a doctoral student are you responsible for applying to the day yourself.

Training in teching and learning in higher education

You must have completed the course Teaching and Learning i Higher Education 1 (HPE101), if you as a doctoral student will teach at the first- or second-cycle level. This course is also offered to to all doctoral students even if you do not teach at the first- or second-cycle levels.

If you have other pedagogical training may you have your qualifications assessed according to the procedure outlined in the University's official document Procedure for testing and recognising university teaching qualifications.

Skills development

As a doctoral student at the University of Gothenburg, you also have access to courses, seminars, workshops and other activities organized by the Human Resources unit. A particularly important course for you as a doctoral student is Protection of research information and the prevention of scientific misconduct. Each faculty offers courses at the third-cycle level. You will find links to the faculties' courses pages here.

You are also able to apply to graduate courses at Chalmers. Doctoral students from the University of Gothenburg is admitted as far as space allows.
