Three candidates for new Vice-Chancellor proposed to the consultative assembly

Three candidates are proposed to the next step in the recruitment of new Vice-Chancellor at the University of Gothenburg. The decision was made at the University Board meeting, November 29.

The three final candidates are Eva Winberg, Pro-Vice-Chancellor at Lund University; Peter Aronsson, Pro-Vice-Chancellor at Linnaeus University and Ole Petter Ottesen, Vice-Chancellor at the University of Oslo.

– These candidates are highly qualified and they all have experience from leading large academic organisations, says Cecilia Schelin Seidegård, Chair of the University Board.

16 people applied for the assignment as Vice-Chancellor, nine people were interviewed, which resulted in three final candidates. The three candidates will be present at the consultative assembly meeting on December 15.

Here are short presentations of the three candidates:

Eva Wiberg is Pro-Vice-Chancellor at Lund University with responsibility for educational issues, quality work and internationalisation. She is a professor in Italian and her doctoral thesis, disseminated in 1997, concerned bilingualism in Swedish-Italian children. Eva Wiberg has a large international experience and has among other things been Director-General at the global joint committee Universitas 21. She was brought up in Italy and has also been an elite heptathlon athlete.

Peter Aronsson is Pro-Vice-Chancellor at Linnaeus University, with responsibility for cooperation and development of the University’s research strategy. He is a Professor in History and defended his thesis in 1992. His research areas are among other things democracy and society; cultural heritage and regional development. Peter Aronsson have experience from large national and international research projects. During the 1990’s he took active part in the operation to transform Växjö Högskola to become Linneaus University. Peter Aronsson is born in Småland and his family are small entrepreneurs.

Ole Peter Ottersen is Vice-Chancellor at the University of Oslo since 2009. He is a Professor in Medicine, and defended his thesis in Oslo 1982. Ole Peter Ottersen have run many national and international research projects. He has also have many international commissions of trust, for example been special advisor in several university evaluations. Ole Peter Ottersen have two honorary doctorates; at Kuopio University in Finland and Doctor École Normale Supérieure in Lyon. He is interested in art and likes to run in the forest and in the mountains.

The consultative assembly is advisory to the University Board, which makes the final decision on January 10, 2017, which candidate that is going to be suggested to the Swedish government. The new Vice-Chancellor takes office on July 1.
