The use of pictures in our communications is important for a number of different reasons: the human eye comprehends a picture more quickly than text, we find it easier to remember content when pictures are used, and pictures create an emotional connection to products and services, which generates a greater sense of engagement for the viewer.
It is therefore important to choose pictures carefully, and to follow the guidelines below.
The imagery used by the University of Gothenburg shall be documentary and authentic, which means that the people and environments featured in the pictures shall be our own students and researchers and our own environments, and they shall be used as naturally as possible. Authentic pictures increase our credibility.
The purchasing of pictures depicting people and environments from external picture banks is therefore to be avoided.
The pictures we use shall communicate GU’s core values of transparency, diversity and civic engagement. Our values permeate the university’s vision and communication strategy.
The central focus of our pictures is on people – it is people who generate life, warmth, movement and activity. We must endeavour to represent diversity and equality in our picture material. Inclusive pictures appeal to a wider audience.
Remember to obtain the consent of those whose images are used.
Our pictures – in particular, the pictures that are used in printed material, covers, adverts and as the main pictures on the website – shall be of high aesthetic quality (composition, depth of focus, colour and contrast, etc.) and of high technical quality (sharpness and resolution). It is therefore worthwhile to engage the services of a professional photographer.
Different types of pictures for different purposes
The picture used must have a purpose, and shall help to clarify or reinforce the content. It may therefore be a good idea to use different categories of pictures:
